Hungary was the last stop on my solo Europe trip in 2015 and I really enjoyed it! However, I feel like I barely spent any time there, and really wish I could have gone for longer than I did. The food was great, the people very friendly, and the dollar is very strong there. Here are a few of my favorite things about Budapest (the only city I visited)! Pottyos (Turo-filled Chocolate Bar)
Turo is a cream cheese-like sweet and tart filling that is used in many Hungarian dishes, and my favorite use was in the chocolate bar Pottyos. I can’t really explain to you what this was like, but it was delicious! They need to be kept in the fridge because of the cheese inside, otherwise I would have brought home a box with me. Don’t be intimidated by them: just try it!
Budapest is known for what are called rune bars. Rune bars used to be used as hiding places and covers during WWII, and today many of these places have been converted into cool, underground pubs. The most popular is called Szimpla, and it was so much fun! Cheap beer, good music, and a cool vibe, this is definitely a place to check out in Budapest!
A traditional Hungarian summer snack, Langos is fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese. I mean, what about that doesn’t sound good? I have a friend who is a firm believer in the phrase “delicious + delicious = delicious” and this dish definitely fits the bill! Get them on many street corners around Budapest (this one was from a food truck!).
