My visit to South Africa was a safari trip for my grandpa’s 75th birthday in 2014…and included 16 members of my family! It was definitely the most unique trip I’ve ever been on and I’m sure it’s going to take a lot to knock it off its top spot. While my obvious highlights include my time on safari and in the lodges, I’ll try my best to highlight a few special moments!
Cape Point
When you get to the top of Cape Point, you’re met with a completely unforgettable view. I was not in the best shape at the time of this climb, but now I’m sure I could easily get to the top of the lighthouse. (There is also a funicular). An absolute must!
Spier Winery (Stellenbosch)
We spent one day in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, and visiting Spier Winery was a definite treat. Bet you didn’t know they had wineries in South Africa, right? This tasting was accompanied by three house-made chocolates. A very fun stop on our trip!
Cheetah Outreach (Cape Town)
At the Cheetah Outreach, you literally get to reach out to cheetahs and pet them! The cheetahs here are trained to protect farms from unwanted pests who may want to eat crops or other animals. Amazing!
Ngala Safari Lodge (Kruger Park)
The first of our two camps was Ngala Safari Lodge, and it was an unforgettable experience! Aside from all of the amazing wildlife that we saw out on the game drives each day, the staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, the food was amazing (have you ever eaten impala? Because I now have), and the lodgings (like very fancy permanent tents) were really comfortable. I would highly recommend this lodge for your African Safari!
Kirkman’s Kamp (Sabi Sands)
Our second safari lodge was Kirkman’s Kamp, yet another amazing lodging! The rooms here are more hotel-like than Ngala, and everything else was spectacular as well. I also highly recommend this for your African safari!
