The past few weeks in my life have been really crazy busy. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just been pretty overwhelming. August is always a packed birthday month for me, as 3 of my best friends and multiple family members have August birthdays. So I decided to highlight just 2 days worth of birthday celebrations into this post.
Not just one but two birthdays were celebrated on this day. The first was my grandfather, who turned 80 last month, but his party was being held a month later so my family could fly in from out of town. While really lovely, taking family photos in the 95+ degree weather was not my ideal way to spend the afternoon. But overall, it was nice to celebrate my grandpa and his life.
Birthday celebration #2 was Mel, one of my best friends since we were 8 years old. Technically we’ve known each other since we were 6, but Mel has informed me that she didn’t actually start liking me until 3rd grade. One of the things I love about her is her honestly and bluntness.
She had a 90′s themed birthday at her apartment, which was a genius idea. My friend Sam dressed up as Wayne from Wayne’s World. My outfit definitely was not up to par. I went with a sort of grunge-ish/goth-ish look. Basically it was hot as balls so I opted for a tank and shorts and converse with a vest, which was promptly taken off due to lack of a/c in her apartment. But I got to catch up with some old friends from high school and celebrated an amazing lady’s special day!
Just 5 days later came the birthday of another one of my besties, Chelsea. We met when we were awkward 13-year-olds and the friendship has stuck ever since. Chelsea chose to have her party at a bar in West Hollywood called “The Den on Sunset.”
Ever since moving back to LA, I have become very old lady-ish with my sleeping habits. I wake up at around 7 every day and like to be in bed (not necessarily sleeping, though) by 10. Okay, that may not be your typical old lady, but all through high school, I definitely stayed up until 1 or 2am before having to get up at 6:30. I have no idea how I did it. I must have been a vampire or something.
The reason I bring this up is because I typically don’t like to go out too late on weekdays so that I’m well rested for the morning. But I gathered all my strength and drove all the way to WeHo on a Thursday. I ended up having a really great time, as I knew I would, once again catching up with old and new friends. I ordered a hamburger with an egg on top. The burger was fine, definitely rarer than I asked for, but I ate and enjoyed. I headed home at around 10pm and was in bed by 10:45. So I guess I can be social AND have a normal sleeping schedule? How odd.
So yes, fun birthday times were had by all. Although I feel like I’ve had my fair share of birthdays for a while. Glad a week until the next important one: my grandma. Cross that bridge when I get there?
